How Did It Start?

Pinewood Derby first began on the 15th of May 1953 at the Scout House in Manhattan Beach, California by Cub Scout Pack 280C. The Pack's Cubmaster, Don Murphy came up with the concept, and he was sponsored by the Management Club at North American Aviation.

Over Time...

The idea spread rapidly, leading to competitions all over the US. Within a year of the first race, the Boy Scouts of America officially adopted Pinewood Derby for all Cub Scout groups. In New Zealand, the exact date of the first Pinewood Derby competition is unclear, but in 2018, a National Pinewood Derby Badge was issued.
